Page limits

The line budget is measured too, for the same reason the character limits below are. An A4 page with 0.4 cm margins holds 62.0 lines at the 10 pt class's 12 pt baseline, and a CV has to reach 60.5 of them to count as filling its page. Section headings are part of that count: each one costs about 1.3 lines, which is why a CV that measured "52 of 52" used to print onto a second page.

Character limits — measured, not set

These used to be typed in here. They are now measured: every column below is taken from cv.tex.j2, and the number of characters is how many of ordinary CV text fit across it in Latin Modern Sans 10 at 9.963 pt — the face and size the compiled PDF actually embeds. The template names Proxima Nova, but \setmainfont only sets mfamily and the next line switches the document to sans, so Proxima Nova is never used. Measuring it was why a line scored 93% full and then overflowed.

They were previously calibrated by filling each field with w and counting. w is 1.66× the average character of real prose, so a line written to that cap stopped at 58% of its column and the page printed half empty. A character count cannot express "fits on the line", because the same 80 characters are half a line of i and an overflowing line of w — so submissions are now checked by width, and these numbers are the budget derived from it. To change one, change the template.
